JORHAT, Oct 6 - Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal today laid the foundation stones for 28 pucca roads to be constructed under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) across Majuli island district.

Sonowal, who was on a days tour to his constituency, laid the foundation stones at two functions one for 11 roads under the Majuli Development Block area and another for 17 roads under the Upper Majuli Development Block area.

A district administration source said the government has sanctioned Rs 59.51 crore for the 28 roads, the total length of which will be 76.51 km.

Pradan Baruah, BJP MP from Lakhimpur under whose constituency Majuli is an assembly segment, along with Duliajan MLA of BJP Terash Gowalla, accompanied Sonowal to both the functions held at Kakatibari Madahab Deb Krishti Sangha and Rangashahi Pragati Rangamancha, the source said.

At both the functions, the Chief Minister said a proper and a strong infrastructure of transport and communication was one of the key components needed for progress and development of a state and its society.

After our government assumed charge in May 2016, the entire State has become a part of a new journey of development for progress and prosperity. Remote and interior places have not been left behind in this endeavour and Majuli is such an example, Sonowal said.

Sonowal said Prime Minister Narendra Modis slogan of Sabka saath sabka vikas has been the cornerstone of his governments policies with an aim to take forward all sections of the society to foster peace, amity and harmony.

The Chief Minister said his government has so far sanctioned over Rs 1,000 crore for allround development of Majuli and work in many spheres was underway.

Sonowal directed the PWD to keep a close watch on the progress of the works to ensure quality and directed the department to complete all the 28 roads within March 31, 2019.

The Chief Minister also said that the government will soon sanction funds to construct another 57 roads on the island.
