DIBRUGARH, July 2 - Following defection of three Congress members and withdrawal of support by two Independent members and one Asom Gana Parishad member, the standing executive council of the Sonowal Kachari Autonomous Council (SKAC) got dissolved today as Dandi Sonowal-led members of the Council tendered their resignations.
The council members submitted their resignations to the Assam Governor through the SKAC Principal Secretary HK Das here today. The new SKAC with BJP members is likely to be formed next week. A general meeting of the SKAC has been convened next Monday where the new executive council will be formed and administered the oath of office.
Hour before the resignation, Dandi Sonowal, the outgoing Chief Executive Member of the SKAC said that two and half years ago the Congress had the mandate to form the executive council. �The people had democratically elected us to power so we handled the affairs of the SKAC. But today we have been reduced to minority due to defection in the Congress fold and shifting of support by two Independent and one AGP members. Let the new body perform better than us for the greater interest of the Sonowal Kachari community,� he said.
Among the 26 elected members, 14 were from the Congress, 9 from the BJP, two were Independent candidates and one was from the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP). As of today, Congress has been reduced to 11 while the BJP has 15 in its fold. Dipuranjan Markary of the BJP is tipped to be the Chief Executive Member in the new executive council.
