TINSUKIA, Feb 7 Union Minister of State for Sports and Youth Affairs Sarbananda Sonowal joined the poll campaign for the candidates of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) contesting the Tinsukia Municipal Board election, slated to be held on February 9.

Addressing a meeting here on Thursday evening, Sonowal maintained that Prime Minister Narendra Modis vision of a clean India and good governance was the prime motto of his party. Tinsukia has already been enlisted for development as a smart city and the Municipal Board will be responsible for this task in many ways, he said. Good civic administration will benefit the people of Tinsukia, the Union minister added.

Sonowal said that provision of modern amenities to the people was also on the partys agenda. The meeting was also addressed by Rameswer Teli, MP, Dibrugarh Lok Sabha constituency.

Meanwhile, Paban Singh Ghatowar, former Union minister, campaigned for Congress candidates seeking election to the 15-member Tinsukia Municipal Board on Friday. Attending several public meeting in different wards, Ghatowar appealed to the voters to elect his party candidates for the betterment of the town. He claimed that the Congress Government in the State has given special attention to improving the conditions of the towns in the State with several welfare schemes, which would continue along with other schemes in the coming years. He alleged that the BJP was not interested in taking up any welfare measures for the people, especially those belonging to the poor sections of the society. The BJP has now even forgotten the assurances it gave prior to the last Parliamentary elections, Ghatowar said, adding that the Congress is the only party which works for the poor and downtrodden.

The campaign meetings were also attended by local MLA Rajendra Prasad Singh.
