Meanwhile, Paban Singh Ghatowar, former Union minister, campaigned for Congress candidates seeking election to the 15-member Tinsukia Municipal Board on Friday. Attending several public meeting in different wards, Ghatowar appealed to the voters to elect his party candidates for the betterment of the town. He claimed that the Congress Government in the State has given special attention to improving the conditions of the towns in the State with several welfare schemes, which would continue along with other schemes in the coming years. He alleged that the BJP was not interested in taking up any welfare measures for the people, especially those belonging to the poor sections of the society. The BJP has now even forgotten the assurances it gave prior to the last Parliamentary elections, Ghatowar said, adding that the Congress is the only party which works for the poor and downtrodden.
