Sonowal calls for exemplary action

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, June 28 - Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal today expressed deep concern over Delhi Golf Club incident where a Khasi woman was misbehaved and denied entry because she was wearing jainsem, a traditional Khasi dress.

Honorary adviser to the department of Health and Family Welfare, Government of Assam Dr Nibedita Borthakur Sondhi today met the Chief Minister and narrated to him the incident.

Sonowal immediately called up Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Kiren Rijiju and sought exemplary punishment against the Club functionaries.

Terming the incident as despicable and condemnable, Sonowal said denying access to Delhi Golf Club and the subsequent misbehaviour by the Club management is not only disrespect to the traditional dress clad Khasi woman, it is a discriminatory attitude towards North Easterners.

Exemplary action must be taken against the Club officials so that it acts as a deterrent towards such discriminatory attitude in future, Sonowal said.

Dr Sondhi also informed the Chief Minister that she would take up the matter with the National Commission for Scheduled Tribes.
