New Delhi, Aug 5 (IANS): Congress president Sonia Gandhi is recovering after a successful surgery abroad for an undisclosed ailment, a party spokesperson said on Friday while also appealing that her privacy be respected.

"The surgery is over...the surgeon has indicated that the operation was successful," Congress spokesperson Janardan Dwivedi told reporters.

Her son Rahul Gandhi, daughter Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and son-in-law Robert Vadra are with her.

Sonia Gandhi underwent surgery Thursday. Informed sources said she was being treated at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Centre in New York. The hospital refused to confirm or deny she was admitted there.

The party also did not say when she left India. The 64-year-old Congress president is now recovering under post-surgery care in intensive care unit.

The Congress spokesperson, however, added it was a personal matter and Sonia Gandhi's privacy should be respected. "As this is a personal matter that pertains to her health and medical treatment, her family requests that her privacy be respected," Dwivedi said.

The Congress spokesperson had on Thursday said Sonia Gandhi has "been recently diagnosed with a medical condition that requires surgery".
