By Spl correspondent

NEW DELHI, July 26 - Congress president Sonia Gandhi today condoled the death of former Union Minister Bijoy Krishna Handique, describing his long journey in public life, both in Assam as well as at the Centre, as remarkable.

He was a valued member of the UPA governments and the void created by his death will be hard to fill, Gandhi said.

Party vice-president Rahul Gandhi also expressed sorrow at Handiques demise.

Condoling the death, Union Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports, Sarbananda Sonowal said that the late Congress leader, by the virtue of his abilities, shouldered various responsibilities at

the Centre with competence. His name would forever be

cherished in Assam as well as in Delhi, Sonowal said.

Remembering Handique as a tall personality, former Union Minister Paban Singh Ghatowar said that his contributions in public life, both as an MP and later as a Minister during the terms of the UPA, would be remembered forever. A man of integrity who led a simple life, Handique was an astute Parliamentarian, Ghatowar said.

A two-member AICC team is arriving at Jorhat tomorrow to call on Handiques family members.
