Sonia authorised to appoint APCC chief

GUWAHATI, Sept 15 � In keeping with the directive of the Congress High Command, the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) today adopted a one-line resolution unanimously authorising All India Congress Committee (AICC) president Sonia Gandhi to appoint the president and other office-bearers of the Pradesh Congress Committee.

According to sources in the APCC, the resolution was moved by Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi at a meeting of the newly-elected APCC members and district Congress committee (DCC) presidents held at the Rajiv Bhawan here at 10-30 am.

The meeting was presided over by the party�s Pradesh Returning Officer Subhash Chopra and was also attended by APCC president Bhubaneswar Kalita, besides the Chief Minister, the newly elected DCC presidents and APCC members. The three aspirants for the post of APCC president, who had withdrawn their nomination papers yesterday, were also present at the meeting.

The resolution moved by the Chief Minister said that it has been unanimously resolved by the meeting to entrust AICC president Sonia Gandhi with the responsibility of constituting the APCC and appointing its president, vice president, treasurer, member of the AICC and the APCC election committee.

The resolution has been sent via FAX to the AICC headquarters and a copy of the resolution would also be carried to the party high command by Subhash Chopra, sources said.

It needs mention here that in view of the 2011 Assembly Elections, the Congress high command had directed the APCC to entrust Sonia Gandhi with the above responsibilities to keep the State wing of the party united.

Accordingly, the three aspirants for the post � Dr Bhumidhar Barman, Social Welfare Minister Akan Bora and former MP Kirip Chaliha � withdrew their nominations yesterday, said the sources.
