JORABAT, Feb 18: The teaching and non-teaching staff of Sonapur College today lodged a complaint against a local news portal for airing an objectionable news clip that has allegedly created an unwarranted situation for the entire college fraternity.

The news portal named Republic Assam, aired a video containing bytes of a number of girl students taken on the day of Saraswati Puja (February 16), where the portal’s reporter is seen putting questions to the students. Interestingly, the video clips of only those girls who failed to answer their questions, were shown in the news clip with funny sound effects.

The news clip presented the video bytes to be of the students of Sonapur College, which however, also contained bytes of students from different institutions, informed faculty members of the college at a press meet organised by the college authorities in the institution’s premises this afternoon.

According to the faculty members, the contents of the news are fabricated and nefariously designed with an intention to malign the image of the institution. The faculty members also alleged that the piece of news aired by the portal has greatly demoralised the students, teaching, non-teaching fraternity of Sonapur College and the local society as a whole.

Condemning the conduct shown by the news portal, Dr Devabrot Khanikor, Principal of Sonapur College said that the news item, which was recorded intentionally with a vindictive motive, has maligned the reputation of the premier institution.

“The news was edited in such a way that it specifically victimised the girl students. This has brought intense mental harassment to the entire college fraternity,” Dr Khanikor added.

Meanwhile, acting against the alleged vindictive motive of the news portal, Dr Khanikor lodged a complaint with the Sonapur Circle Officer, calling for action against Republic Assam. Later, the students’ body of the college also filed an FIR at the Sonapur Police Station regarding the same. It is also feared that the news clip targeting the student community could create social unrest in the region leading to a law-an-order situation.
