Sonapur College celebrates 29th foundation day

JORABAT, Aug 2 - Sonapur College celebrated its 29th foundation day today with various programmes where Education Minister Siddhartha Bhattacharya was the Chief Guest.

On the occasion the Education Minister inaugurated a newly constructed library building of the college funded by Rashtriya Ucchatar Madyamik Siksha Abhiyan (RUSA).

Speaking on the occasion, Bhattacharya appreciated the various healthy practices of Sonapur College like inculcating the habit of discipline and sincerity among the students. The reflection of these distinctive practices is quite perceptible in the smart turnout of the students of the college, especially the role played by the NCC cadets during the programme, he said.

At the meeting that was presided over by Dr Jitram Dutta, former academic registrar of Gauhati University and president of the governing body of Sonapur College, the minister said a move is under consideration for introducing commerce stream in different colleges of Assam which are currently running with only one sanctioned stream.

Addressing the meeting, Atul Bora, MLA of Dispur LAC, hailed the remarkable growth achieved by Sonapur College within the short span of its existence and appreciated the contributions of the principal, the faculty members, local public and all other stakeholders in the college�s achievements.

Earlier, Dr Devabrot Khanikor delivered his welcome address and apprised the gathering of the achievements and the future goals of the college.

Earlier in the morning, floral tributes were paid to all the people associated with the college since its inception and who since left this world, by Sambar Ronpee, a noted social worker and founder vice president of the college.

The meeting concluded with the vote of thanks offered by Dr Biman Patowary, Associated Professor and the State anthem.
