Son of expired Covid patient held for assaulting JMCH doctor

JORHAT, Sept 13 - The son of an expired Covid-19 patient was arrested on charges of assaulting a doctor of Jorhat Medical College and Hospital on Saturday evening.

According to a police source, Ishanjyoti Saikia of Bokakhat Civil sub-division of Golaghat district was arrested after JMCH authorities lodged a complaint against him with the police stating that he attacked Dr Dipjyoti Saikia after his father Arup Saikia expired of Covid-19 complications on Saturday evening at the JMCH.

Ishanjyoti alleged that his father had died due to negligence by the hospital. The source stated that Ishanjyoti was arrested under Sections 332, 353 of IPC and also under Section 4 of Assam Medical Service Persons and Damage to Property of Medical Service Institutions (Prevention of Violence and Damage to Property) Act, 2011, Assam, after a case (1928/2020) was registered against him at the Jorhat Police Station following lodging of the complaint.

JMCH Superintendent Dr Purnima Barua, speaking to newspersons, said that Arup Saikia, a Covid-19 patient who was also suffering from diabetes, was admitted to the hospital on Friday morning and was shifted to the ICU on Saturday morning.

�After the patient passed away on Saturday evening, his son Ishanjyoti who accompanied his father along with another son, assaulted the doctor on duty named Dipjyoti Saikia, who has been working day and night taking care of patients,� Dr Barua said, adding that all required medical care was provided to the patient.

She further said that Ishanjyoti�s allegation of neglect towards his father by medical staff should have been brought to her notice. �We always attend to all types of calls and now there is an employee assigned to coordinate with the attendants of the patients and doctors,� Dr Barua observed.
