Social worker raises eyebrows in Dhekiajuli

By Shambhu Boro

TEZPUR, Nov 5 - At a time when most of the political leaders, including ticket aspirants of different political parties, are busy convincing high commands or the senior party leaders for getting tickets for the upcoming assembly elections to be held next year, a social worker Dr Birendra Kumar Nath in Dhekiajuli area is on toes for an overall development of the district.

When asked, Dr Birendra Kumar Nath said that though the Congress-ruled Government is showcasing a rosy picture of developmental works across the State, the people of interior areas under Dhekiajuli LAC in Sonitpur district are yet to get the real taste of growth.

Despite a number of developmental projects proposed for the region under the State Government, the people living in the remote areas like Mejengjuli, Sonai-Rupai, Sopai Rowmari, Hograjuli-Kashamari, Sirajuli, Sopai Balijuri, Sopai-Rowmari Pothar etc., are deprived of basic amenities, he said, adding that the people of these areas are facing acute drinking water shortage, deplorable road condition, electricity problems and proper education facilities for many years.

Dr Nath also alleged that these people have been deprived of all sorts of Government facilities. Even after the elapse of 68 years of Independence, proper development in these areas is a far cry due to the Governments indifference towards them.

The northern part of the Dhekiajuli township falls under No-71 Dhekiajuli LAC in Sonitpur district and the area from Pachnoi river to Sonai Rupai wild life sanctuary is dominated by the local indigenous people like the Bodos, Adivashis, Rabhas, Nepalis etc., adjacent to the Assam-Arunachal border. The woes of residents of this belt have fallen on deaf ears, he said.

Coming down heavily on the lackadaisical attitude of the Government towards the developmental works in the region, he lamented that most of the roads connecting the Hograjuli, Belsiri, Misamari and Batachipur Railway stations and the NH-15 at Dhekiajuli town have been in dilapidated condition for the last a couple of decades.

Due to alleged corruption by the panchayat representatives, the beneficiaries were deprived of their required facilities under IAY schemes, MNREGA scheme etc. Incidences of death of patients in ambulances due to bad road conditions were also not unusual in the region, he added.

However, the people of the area under the Dhekiajuli LAC alleged that instead of looking into the matters related to the citizens, the local MLA is showing least interest in schemes for developmental works.

It is worth mentioning that for the development of roads, crores of rupees, including MLA and MP funds, have been sanctioned, but all in vain. Dr Birendra Kuamar Nath, who is also one of the BJP ticket aspirants, said, We are optimistic if a candidate with good image and transparency wins from this constituency in the upcoming assembly polls, there will also be growth in the region too.
