By AJIT PATOWARY

GUWAHATI, May 24 - The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) has launched a countrywide social media campaign to mobilise public opinion against the Union government for approving coal mining activities in the Dehing-Patkai rainforest areas.

The social media cell of the APCC has launched the Save Dehing-Patkai twitter campaign with this aim in view and already many leading personalities from several parts of the country have extended support to the campaign.

Disclosing this here yesterday, APCC general secretary Apurba Kumar Bhattacharyya said in a statement that the Central governments move to allow coal mining activities in the Dehing-Patkai rainforest areas came at a time when the entire world has voiced in unison against all such acts that accelerate the process of global warming. The APCC demands immediate revocation of the above decision.

It warns the governments in the State and at the Centre to refrain from any activity that may spell doom for the Dehing-Patkai rainforest, which is also known as the Amazon of the East.

The Congress would always resist all such nefarious acts, said the APCC general secretary.
