�Smoke Free Mizoram� programme launched

AIZAWL, June 29 � Mizoram Chief Minister Lal Thanhawla today launched a �Smoke Free Mizoram� programme to make the State free from smoking and tobacco consumption.

Launching the ambitious programme, Lal Thanhawla said that due to the high awareness among the Mizos about the adverse health effects of tobacco consumption and smoking, only few people smoke in public places in the State.

Dr Jane R Ralte, Nodal officer of the Mizoram State Tobacco Control Society, said that between 2008 and 28 June 2011, at least 3,077 people have been fined for breaking the COPTA by smoking in public and No-Smoking Zones and Rs 84,503 collected from the offenders. � PTI
