SMCH gets Covid-19 test centre status

SILCHAR, March 19 - Along with medical colleges at Guwahati, Dibrugarh and Jorhat, Silchar Medical College and Hospital has been inducted by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) as the fourth centre in the State for coronavirus disease (Covid-19) tests.

Addressing mediapersons at the hospital, Dr Babul Kumar Bezbaruah, Principal of the college along with his team said that with authorisation of being the fourth test centre for Covid-19 cases in the State, the hospital has already sent samples of one person suspected of Covid-19 to the National Institute of Virology (NIV) Pune.

�We have been inducted as the fourth Covid-19 test centre and already sample of one person suspected with the virus has been sent to NIV, Pune. On Wednesday, another suspected case has been reported here and samples will be sent as well. At present, we have facilities for eight-bed isolation ward and 20 more beds shall be equipped in two days. The tests will be done strictly by following the protocol laid down by Government and agencies such as ICMR, WHO etc.,� Dr Bezbaruah informed.

The SMCH Principal sought cooperation from the media in generating awareness among the masses so that fear psychosis and panic could be averted.

Dr Abhijit Swami, Superintendent of the hospital informed that there are 200 kits for testing cases and hand washing is being intensively prioritised.
