SKAC to move HC over roofing sheet scam

By Staff Correspondent

DIBRUGARH, May 10 - A huge scam has allegedly taken place in the distribution of CGI roofing sheets by the Sonowal Kachari Autonomous Council (SKAC).

An FIR was lodged in this regard by the All Sonowal Kachari Youth Forum here in November last, which is gathering dust.

Jadumoni Boruah, general secretary of the Forum, who alleged that a scam involving nearly Rs 1.5 crore told newsmen here on Thursday that they would approach the Gauhati High Court as the police here did not dare to take forward the case (No. 1809/18 u/s 406/420 IPC) because the accused leaders owed allegiance to the ruling party.

The leaders of the Forum who addressed newsmen at the Janajati Kalyan Bhawan here said that as per the official supply order issued to the supplier, i.e., Chandramoni Hazarika, the specifications of the roofing sheets mentioned were that they should be of Rhino brand with length of 9 feet and thickness 0.50-mm.

Further, the cost per bundle of CGI roofing sheets was fixed at Rs 4,571 and the quantity mentioned was 6,563 bundles. However, members of the Forum alleged that the beneficiaries were given 0.35-mm thick roofing sheets, the market price of which is only Rs 2,500 per bundle. This is enough to prove that Rs 2,071 per bundle has been misappropriated, said Boruah.

The leaders of the Forum said that they had lodged a complaint with the Superintendent of Police Subashini Sankaran and even submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal.

Unfortunately, members of the Forum claimed to have noticed no kind of progress in the case so far. The Forum named Chief Executive Member (CEM) Dipuranjan Markary, Deputy CEM Tankeshwar Sonowal and former Principal Secretary of SKAC Himanta Kumar Das to be involved in the scam.
