RIO DE JANEIRO, Aug 19 - Indian ace shuttler Pusarla V Sindhu exhibited an excellent show before going down to top seed Spaniard Carolina Marin 21-19, 12-21, 15-21 in the women�s singles final of the Rio Olympic badminton event at the Pavillion 4 of the Riocentro here.
After a slow start in the first game, Sindhu was fighting neck and neck, but was trailing till the later part with the score reading 16-18. But after that the Indian girl showed better temperament and took six consecutive points that not only enabled her in overtaking Carolina but also finish the game 21-19.
However, in the second game the Spain girl took control from the starting point and she did not allow Sindhu to catch or overtake her. Carolina earned a facile 21-12 victory in the second game.
In the third and deciding game, at the initial stage Sindu was trailing 6-9. But she staged a brilliant fightback to level the score 10-10. After that it an evenly-played match. However, the Spaniard forced Sindhu to make some errors to gain an advantage of score at 16-13.
But it was Sindhu who was never in a mood to leave without fight and narrowed the gap to 14-16. It was the last attempt made by the Indian as her opponent, a little bit ill-tempered, came into domination and sealed the issue at 21-15.
After all, it was an excellent effort by Sindhu who was in a never-say-die mood and made India proud by winning the silver medal, first by an Indian woman in Olympics.
