TURA, Aug 16 Torrential rains that lashed Garo Hills since Sunday night have taken a toll on human life with six persons being killed after landslides buried them alive in the heart of Tura town in the early morning hours of Tuesday. Among the dead was a 11 month old baby boy.

A depression over the region coupled with the seasonal monsoon showers created a deadly cocktail of thunderstorms which gathered strength by Monday evening. The rains came down heavily over the entire three districts of Garo Hills.

An elderly couple, Arun R Marak and and his wife Chibisik G Momin were buried alive inside their home in Modynagar locality while at nearby Tetengkol area a 23 year old girl Elvira A Sangma also died in similar circumstances.

At Nabinpali locality of Tura bazaar, a father tried desperately to save his 11 month old baby Abik Saha from a mud wall collapse but sadly lost the fight. The father has been admitted to hospital with injuries.

Two other persons Poresh Das (30) of Dobasipara and Bijoy Ch Sangma of Rongkha Chiring lost their lives in the landslides.

Roads and bridges were severely damaged by the heavy rains at several places. In the plain belt region of West Garo Hills the Jinjiram river was flowing above the danger mark and the entire Tikrikilla to Selsella road remained submerged. The embankment at Rangamati-Sonamati in Garobadha town was also breached by the flood waters.

In South Garo Hills district, all roads connecting the district to the rest of the State has been cut off by landslides.
