Six held in honey-trap case

By STAFF CORRESPONDENT

JORHAT, Nov 21 - Jorhat police have arrested six people, including two women, from Sivasagar and Jorhat on Wednesday for allegedly running a honey-trap racket.

According to the police, the gang has been allegedly blackmailing several persons by setting up honey-traps.

A police source stated that the accused persons are from Sivasagar and Charaideo districts and they allegedly used the women to lure their victims to a rented house at Gayangaon in Jorhat and then blackmail and extort money from them by threatening to file false cases against them.

Two such victims filed complaints at the Jorhat police station last week alleging that they were called to the house by a person on the pretext of discussing some matter and later forcibly took their objectionable photographs with a woman, the source said.

The duo was reportedly asked to pay a hefty sum. The accused threatened to make the photographs public and also file false cases against them if they fail to meet their demand.

In a separate incident, police arrested a youth identified as Mriganga Hazarika on charges of demanding money from trucks carrying coal at Cinnamara on the outskirts of Jorhat town.

A police source stated that local people caught Hazarika when he along with few others were allegedly stopping coal-laden trucks from Nagaland on Sunday and demanding money from them. He was later handed over to the Cinnamara police outpost.

Hazarika was produced at a local court on Monday and forwarded to judicial custody, the source said. Three youths who were with him, however, managed to flee from the spot in a car, the locals told the police.

There have been allegations that Hazarika and his accomplices are members of a syndicate operating with the blessings of some powerful leaders of the district.
