Sivasagar Post Office sans Post Master for over a decade

By ANN Service

SIVASAGAR, April 4 - The Sivasagar Head Post Office is running without a Post Master for over a decade now severely hampering customer services in the district HQ.

As the Postal Department is opting towards the banking sector more nowadays, RD or savings accounts opening or closing activities take many days due to absence of a regular Post Master. On maturity of a savings account, a customer has to wait for over a month sometimes to get his or her money. There is only one printer for the savings section and when it develops technical snags, it takes weeks to get repaired. There are regular long queues of customers in front of the service windows in a crammed space of the old office building. Though the office building got repaired a couple of years back, it is not spacious enough to accommodate the ever-increasing customers with every passing year. A single Assistant in the lounge has to serve the customers with PLI, Registration of mails, Money Order, IPO and selling stamps as well which is against rational workload. A customer has to wait for hours in the queue to get his or her work done in Sivasagar post office.

Another very serious matter that concerns the public is the inordinate delay in mail delivery in the Postal Department. Manoj Borthakur, a customer sent a registered post to The Assam Tribune on March 24 last. It came to his notice that the packet was not delivered to the desk of the Executive Editor of the newspaper till April 2. One Aparajita Das of Mankata Tinali near here received her admit card for the written examination for the post of Junior Assistant in the Dept of Directorate of Library Science on March 25, 15 days after the same was posted on March 10 only after the examination was over.
