Sivasagar dist flood death toll rises to 3, over 47 villages affected

SIVASAGAR, June 24 - One Sunanda Gogoi (66) of Boliaghat in worst-hit Konwarpur mouza died in the floods, which has affected 47 villages in Sivasagar district till today. The deceased had gone out to collect cattle fodder and was missing since yesterday. His body was recovered by the local people at around 3 pm today.

Two other persons, Sunil Nath (22) of Santak and Ratul Swarnakar of Moiramora gaon � both of Nazira subdivision died in the rising waters of Dikhow on June 22 . State Minister for Disaster Management Jogen Mohan distributed ex-gratia of Rs 4 lakh to the families of both the deceased from Assam Disaster Response Fund yesterday.

In Nazira subdivision 24 villages and in Sivasagar subdivision 23 villages have been submerged by the Brahmaputra, which along with its tributaries Desung, Dikhow, Darika, Mitong and Demow are flowing above the danger mark, according to an official release received here. With heavy and very heavy rainfall indicated during the next 24 hours in the catchment areas in Nagaland of these tributaries by the MET department, the flood situation may turn worse.

Meanwhile, over 14,000 people and 4000 animals have been affected. More than 800 individuals were shifted to 7 relief camps in Sivasagar and Nazira. Ward no. 9, 10 and 14 are the worst-affected in Sivasagar town. NDRF and SDRF jawans have been rescuing marooned people from the worst-affected areas in Konwarpur, Boliaghat and Soley Gaon. The district administration has begun distribution of relief materials in the camps.

Dikhow flood waters have flowed over the embankment at Hanhchora and Boliaghat inundating the nearby Choulkara, Konwarpur, Nakatani and several other villages. Konwarpur HS School, Hanhchora HS School, Konwapur ME School have been submerged. Altogether 500 hectares of crop land has been submerged till Monday, Mun Gogoi, ADC, Sivasagar informed.
