Sivasagar demonstrators demand Akhils release

By Correspondent

SIVASAGAR, July 28 - Several local organisations here organised protest demonstrations in various parts of the district against the continuous detention of Akhil Gogoi, Debangana Kalita, Adivasi leader Baldev Telly and other anti-CAA leaders.

A symbolic human chain was formed in front of the historic Rangghar by members of Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti yesterday with placards demanding unconditional release of the anti-CAA leaders, better treatment to the detainees who have tested COVID-19 positive and to refrain from adopting alleged vindictive steps taken by the BJP government against the KMSS leaders.

Pronoy Hazarika, joint secretary of KMSS, Ritumoni Hazarika, organising secretary, Manob Dutta, district secretary of Chatra Mukti Sangram Samity and 11 others were later arrested by Sivasagar Police.

The leaders told mediapersons that their struggle against the alleged divisive and undemocratic policies of the government will continue till the aforementioned leaders are set free.

They added that the protest in front of the historic Rangghar is only the beginning of a bigger demonstration by uniting all democratic forces.

Similar demonstrations were reported from Moran, Amguri, Demow and Mahmora during the last couple of days. In Mahmora, AATTA demanded immediate release of KMSS leader Akhil Gogoi and Adivasi leader Baldev Telly, who was apprehended by the Army on alleged charges of clandestine arms supply which the demonstrators claimed was conspiratorial.

Stephen Lakra and Deben Urang, president and secretary of ATTSA said in a release that security agencies have failed to justify the arrest of the anti-CAA leaders as yet and the government has neglected the UN and the Supreme Court directives to release all detainees in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.
