SIVASAGAR, Nov 2 - With a view to implement proper and systematic waste management, segregation at source during door-to-door garbage collection was initiated in Sivasagar district on Friday.

Sivasagar Deputy Commissioner Dr MS Lakshmi Priya inaugurated the door-to-door collection from Sivasagar Municipal Board (SMB) water supply project campus at Phukan Nagar.

The door-to-door collection initiated by the Assam State Livelihood Mission (DAY- NULM) under SMB in association with Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban) will be implemented through the women SHGs.

The initiative began on Friday at Ward No. 10 and 14 under Sivasagar Municipal Board.

The inauguration programme was also attended by the chairperson of Sivasagar Municipal Board Mridusmita Sinha, Executive Officer Rituraj Bordoloi, Ward Commissioners, AEE, SMB, Mridul Nath, CPO of Swachh Bharat Mission, Mirajuddin Ahmed, CPM of DAY-NULM, Sivasagar and a host of local people.

The purpose of the event was highlighted by Executive Officer of Sivasagar Municipal Board Rituraj Bordoloi.

Addressing the gathering, the Deputy Commissioner elaborated on the importance of door-to-door collection of waste with source segregation which is the first step towards successful solid waste management.

She appealed to all the local people to start backyard composting or pit composting. She also appealed to keep the waste separately as dry waste and wet waste.

Sivasagar Municipal Board initially started the door-to-door collection by engaging the Area Level Federation (ALF) and Self Help Groups (SHGs) of DAY-NULM as pilot project in Ward No. 10 and 14.

The remaining wards will be covered periodically by engaging ALF and SHGs in the coming days, the Deputy Commissioner said.

The Deputy Commissioner also emphasised on women empowerment through the development of sustainable solid waste management by ALF and SHGs.

The DC reiterated that this kind of activity will also help women SHGs in income generation as well as to sustain their livelihoods.

The first segregation of garbage at source was initiated by the Deputy Commissioner herself.

An MoU was also signed between SMB and ALFs/SHGs of DAY-NULM, namely Mulagabharu and Janani SHG.

Notably, the initiative of engaging SHGs in the process of garbage collection is reportedly unique in Sivasagar district.
