Sivasagar Book Fair gets under way

SIVASAGAR, Nov 3 - The Sixth Sivasagar Book Fair organised by KHOJ in association with the Sivasagar district administration got off to a colourful start yesterday as former Professor of English in Dibrugarh University and a noted critic Dr Ananda Bormudoi lit the ceremonial lamp and announced opening of the 11-day carnival of knowledge for the students,book sellers, publishers and book lovers at the Dr Nirmal Probha Devi Sahitya Kshetra at the Boarding Field.

In his brief speech, he said that books have a profound impact in society. He said books are of three types - one that one reads for pleasure, one that are ornamental and decorate the book shelves, while others that guide humanity, moves society and the world.

Dr Bormudoi also released the souvenir brought out on the occasion. Sivasagar DC Dr MS Laksmipriya paid tributes to the litterateurs of the past and spoke on the influence books can have on young minds.

Four distinguished persons, namely Makhan Bora (an exponent in dance and music), Khagendranath Bhuyan (educationist), Pradip Dutta (reporter) and Lakhikanta Mahanta (noted entrepreneur) were felicitated by the organisers in the meeting. Dr Prakash Kotoky, executive president of the organising committee delivered the welcome address.
