TURA, March 11 - Rev Sister Guadalupe Velasco, who was fondly called the Mother Teresa of the Garo Hills, passed away at the Nazareth Hospital in Shillong this morning. She was 97.

The demise of Sister Gaudalupe has been condoled by Chief Minister Conrad Sangma.

The Spanish nun, who came to the Garo Hills over 65 years ago and made the region her home, was a part of the Catholic congregation, Missionaries of Christ Jesus.

Her mortal remains will be brought to St Xaviers School here, the place she had made her home for close to seven decades. The funeral service of Sister Guadalupe is scheduled to take place tomorrow. She will be laid to rest at the Catholic cemetery adjacent to the Bishop House.

Chief Minister Sangma spoke of Sister Gaudalupes service to Meghalaya for over seven decades. Her contribution as a Catholic woman missionary, apart from furthering the missions work, was to provide health care to the sick .and the suffering in the Garo Hills. Her service, especially to the patients of leprosy in Tura, garnered her the much deserved respect and love from the native people. She was a woman anchored in faith and prayer, and performed her duties with utmost diligence. She was a kind and loving individual whose love for God reflected immensely in her service towards His people, said Sangma.
