By Correspondent

SILAPATHAR, July 29 The Simen river has treatened the villagers of Simenchapari area, which is in the eastern part of the river and greater area of Simenmukh, Muktiyar and Dimow GP, which falls in the western part of the river.

According to sources, 16 families of Kaziranga village, Rongpuria-gaon, Atakpur and Dadora villages have taken shelter at Milanjyoti Primary School under Jonai subdivision since July 13 following erosion of their dwelling houses as well as their cultivable land by Simen river. The families are struggling to run their families, but the concerned authorities have not taken any measures to end their miseries.

It may be mentioned here that in 2006-07, Rs 87 lakh was sanctioned for construction of spuns and channel cutting on the upstream of the river and Rs 94 lakh was sanctioned for construction of spuns on the downstream.

Moreover, an amount of Rs 88.58 lakh was sanctioned under National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA) at Rongpuria area for construction of spuns and channel cutting to check the erosion of Simen river in 2007-08.

The public have criticized the concerned authorities role in this regard for which the riverine villagers have to face innumerable problems even after sanction of Rs 29.58 lakh in the last two years.

Despite this, the families of Somkong GP and Simenmukh GP are passing sleepless nights due to the continuous erosion of Simen river in the area. Around 35 families of Simenmukh GP like Lamabasti, No.4 Majarbari, No.1 Horinathpur and Ghatpata are taking shelter on the riversides.

The Takam Mising Porin Kebang (TMPK) has expressed grave concern over lack of measures in this regard by concerned authorities.
