GUWAHATI, Aug 1 - Notwithstanding the widespread disaster caused in every sector, the lockdown is showing some good results too. Especially, Assam has witnessed a drastic decline in road accidents during this period.
According to data availed from the GVK EMRI 108 emergency response service, in April 1,011 road accident cases were reported across the State compared to 2,482 cases during the same period last year.
In May 1,270 cases were reported. In the corresponding period last year the number of reported cases was 2,750. In June, the emergency response service recorded altogether 1,266 road accident cases and in June 2019 it had recorded altogether 2,077 such cases. Similarly, in July, the number of cases reported this year was 902 and in the corresponding month in 2019 it was 1,552.
In April this year, the highest number of road accidents (106) had been reported from Kamrup district, followed by Nagaon (74) and Barpeta (61) districts. In April 2019, the highest 816 cases were reported from Nagaon district, followed by Dhemaji (158) and Barpeta (155).
In May this year, Nagaon district recorded the highest 122 cases, followed by Kamrup (103) and Barpeta (80) districts. Last year in the corresponding month, the highest 256 cases were reported from Kamrup district, followed by Barpeta (187) and Golaghat (175) districts.
In June this year, Kamrup district recorded the highest 118 road accident cases, followed by Nagaon (91) and Sonitpur (85) districts. In the corresponding month last year Nagaon district recorded the highest 189 cases, followed by Barpeta (163) and Sonitpur (146) districts.
In July, the highest 86 cases were reported from Sonitpur district, followed by Golaghat (72) and Nagaon (66) districts while in July last year the highest 150 cases were reported from Kamrup district, followed by Nagaon (133) and Kamrup (Metro) (103) districts.
Dhurjoti Prasad, an official of the emergency response service said compared to last year�s data, in April this year the number of road accidents decreased by 145.50 per cent across the State. In May the cases decreased by 116.54 per cent, while in June it got reduced by 64.06 per cent and in July road accident cases decreased by 77.03 per cent.
The data however revealed that with relaxations in lockdown norms, road accidents in Assam have started rising again.
In case of Guwahati, in comparison to last year, in April this year the city had witnessed a decline of road accident cases by 123.64 per cent. In May the declining rate was 129.31 per cent, in June it was 100 per cent and in July the rate of decline was 260.11 per cent.
Meanwhile, the GVK EMRI 108 today celebrated Emergency Response Centre Day on the theme �Life under COVID-19 pandemic�.
