Silpi Divas to be observed centrally today

GUWAHATI, Jan 16 � Silpi Divas will be centrally observed by the government at a function scheduled at Rabindra Bhawan here tomorrow. The Silpi Bota will be conferred on Jyotirmoy Kakati and Hiren Gohain. The award carries Rs 1 lakh and a citation.

The Directorate of Cultural Affairs has chalked out an elaborate programme to mark the occasion. The function will start at 5 pm. The North East Zone Cultural Centre will recognise the talent of three young artistes of the region in various art forms. The award carries Rs 10, 000 each and a citation.

As a mark of honour to the cultural icon of the State Rupkonwar Jyotiprasad Agarwala, who made the effort to usher the positive changes in the society through his creativity, the Gauhati Artists� Guild in association with Artist Forum, Morigaon will organise a painting workshop amongst jail inmates tomorrow.

The objective behind this initiative is to reform the mental horizon of the prisoners and change them for the better. The daylong workshop will be held at District Jail, Morigaon and will be conducted by artists Kishor Kumar Das, Jyotiprasad Mahanta and others.

�Around 50 jail inmates will attend the workshop that will start from 10 am on the occasion of Silpi Divas. Rupkonwar wanted to change the society through creative endeavours and we are confident that there will be change in the jail inmates after they play with colours and brush,� said Kishor Kumar Das adding that the medium of colours has the power to change the psyche of man.

Das said that this workshop will provide an opportunity to the prisoners to let their imagination flow.

On the other hand, the Publication Board, Assam is going to release the 8th revised and enlarged edition of the Jyotiprasad Rochonawali on the occasion of Silpi Divas. Several articles penned by Rupkonwar and not published before and his write-ups for children, besides precious articles and letters by those who came into his association has been included in this edition.

Meanwhile, the All Assam Students� Union (AASU) paid its tribute to the memory of the song writer, poet, playwright and film maker with a central function at Lakhimpur on Wednesday. The student body�s two-day programme will conclude on January 17 with an open session and cultural function.

In Guwahati, the AASU will remember the contributions of the cultural icon on January 17 at a function scheduled at the Khanapara Ganesh Mandir Vidyalaya ground.

Silpi Divas will also be observed at Srimanta Sankaradeva Kalakshetra here. The function, which will start from 10.30 am, will include presentation of songs and poetry of Rupkonwar and dance performed on the songs of Rupkonwar.
