By A Correspondent

NAGAON, March 15 - An employee of The Assam Co-operative Jute Mills Ltd at Silghat identified as Jayanta Kumar Barman allegedly hacked his wife and three daughters to death at his quarter on Saturday night while they were asleep and fled the spot after locking the door from outside.

The deceased were identified as Brajawanti Barman (37), Nikita Barman (12), Bhaswati Barman (10) and Nibedita Barman (6).

Sources said Barman, who hailed from Mukalmuwa in Nalbari district, had the habit of gambling and was in debt of more than Rs 5 lakh.

On Saturday night, when the family went to sleep, Barman killed them, locked the door, and fled. Some locals said he was seen leaving Silghat by train.

On Sunday, neighbours found the door locked from outside and peeped inside and saw the bodies. They informed police, and during preliminary investigation, a note was found where Barman said some cash and ornaments were kept to pay off his debt, but the cash could not be found.
