Silchar student wins over poverty

SILCHAR, June 1 - Usha Das, mother of two children and a resident of Chandrapur village, 5 km from Silchar, is struggling hard to run the expenses of her family and manage money for buying medicines for her husband Pijush Kanti Das who she told is on bed because of paralysis since 2010. But she is a proud mother of Bishal Das, who despite missing out on the merit list has done exceptional result in this year�s HSLC examination.

A student of Adharchand Higher Secondary School, Bishal secured 562 marks in total falling short of just four marks which could have placed him on the HSLC merit list. Talking to The Assam Tribune, Bishal revealed his love for civil services and said, �I am disappointed for not earning a place in the merit list. But, I shall work even harder to fulfil my dream to be an IAS officer to serve the nation.�

He added that he will take up science to complete his Class 12 examination in his school. Bishal admitted that his teachers in the school have helped him immensely to solve his queries. Usha said that she gives tuition to young children of the locality to run her family. Her husband used to work in a hardware store before he suffered a massive cardiac arrest.

On the other hand, Prasanta Kumar Nath, principal of the school, said, �Bishal has been a meritorious student and we had expectations from him. However, we are elated at his performance and shall extend all possible help in his studies ahead.� Nath also said that he will discuss with his colleagues on arranging scholarships for Bishal.
