Silchar MLA meets Gogoi over civic body crisis

By Correspondent

SILCHAR, Oct 9 Silchar MLA Bithika Dev has held discussions with Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi to resolve the present crisis at the Silchar Municipal Board (SMB). Dev, whose youngest daughter Susmita was ousted from the SMB after seven of her fellow Congress ward commissioners voted in favour of the no-confidence motion moved by the BJP in July, met the Chief Minister at his official residence in Dispur.

Bithika Dev had written a letter to the Chief Minister, narrating the turn of events at the SMB and how these threatened to have a negative impact on the Congress partys poll prospects. Gogoi had reportedly forwarded the letter to the Urban Development Minister, Dinesh Prasad Goala.

The Silchar MLA said that Goala has admitted that she had made no personal allegation against anyone. She, however, did not hide her grievance as Goala had never discussed anything about the SMB crisis with her though she was the local MLA. Goala had reportedly told Bithika that the situation was such that he could not arrange a meeting with her. Later, he had reportedly assured of exploring all possibilities to resolve the crisis as the entire episode had become a threat for the partys poll prospects.

Meanwhile, Goala had reportedly assured Bithika Dev that he would sit in a meeting with the district Congress president, Arun Dutta Majumdar, Udharband MLA Ajit Singh and the Silchar MLA soon and a final date would be fixed for convening a meeting with the two factions of the ruling party in the board. However, Goala said, the SMB crisis did not figure in his meeting with Bithika Dev.

Meanwhile, Bithika Dev met PWD Minister Ajanta Neog today and requested her to visit the Barak valley to inspect the pathetic road conditions. Neog has consented to visit the valley in November. She further took up the matter of a proposed road culvert on the Hailakandi Road near the Silchar town with Neog.
