Silchar gears up for Puja festivities

SILCHAR, Oct 12 - As Durga Puja inches closer, the buzz around Silchar and its outskirts are getting vibrant with beautiful Puja pandals getting the final touches.

Despite the forecast of rainfall during Puja, people of the second biggest urban sprawl in the State are unfazed and immersed in the Puja mood.

In its 10th year, the All Medical Sales People Durga Puja Committee adjacent to the Teachers Training College here has resolved to spread the message of regeneration and reuse of wastes through its Durga idol. Mithun Roy, secretary of the Puja committee, on Wednesday said. �Since 2009, we have been showcasing a variety of themes including jute, glass, homeopathy medicine bottles, pencil scraps, chains, wheels and automobile parts as part of Make in India theme etc. This year, we decided to amalgamate the things we used over the past nine years and echo the message of re-using wastes.� Roy was quick to inform that on Mahasaptami, they would reach out to the poor and needy persons in the vicinity with clothes as a part of their community service.

On the other hand, a giant replica of the historic Titanic ship is all set to pull crowds at the pandal of Udharbandh Kalibari Road Puja Committee. The iconic ship�s dummy is 120 feet by 75 feet and has the famous Vidyasagar bridge of Kolkata alongside to add to its beauty. According to Sankar Roy, secetary of the Puja Committee, puja revellers would be entralled to see the marine life and the Durga idol within the ship. The idol would be made from acquatic shells, the organisers informed. Meanwhile, like every year, elaborate security arrangements including installation of CCTVs have been completed to make the Puja experience hastle free for the pandal hoppers, Roy added.
