Silchar body�s request to GSCA president

GUWAHATI, Aug 30 - Senior journalist DN Chakravartty, who is also the president of the Guwahati Senior Citizens� Association (GSCA), has been requested by the general secretary of the Bhasha Swahyd Station Swahid Smaran Samiti of Tarapur, Silchar, formed in 1961 following a movement for the cause of the Bengali language in the Barak Valley, to exercise his influence to get the necessary clearance from the Assam Government publicising the name of the Silchar railway station as Bhasha Swahid Station Silchar.

Chakravartty said the Assam government should demonstrate its goodwill and the goodwill of the people of the Brahmaputra Valley towards the hopes and aspirations of the people of the Barak Valley.

He requested Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal to issue the necessary gazette notification in this regard.

On the other hand, Chakravartty conveyed his best wishes to over 400 members of the Association on the occasion of the 21st foundation of the Association today.

The Association earlier decided to felicitate retired Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi for his performance as a legal luminary for decades but the foundation day could not be celebrated today due to the pandemic situation.

He paid tributes to the memory of Justice Bholanath Sarma, the founder president, and former presidents Chief Justice Dambarudhar Pathak, Justice Haque, Kamaleswar Bora and former general secretary Prafulla Kumar Mahanta for their leadership in bringing up the Association.

He also recollected the contributions of several past members and office-bearers.
