Silchar bids adieu to Mother Durga

By Correspondent

SILCHAR, Oct 5 After three days of unbrindled joy, devotees across the town bid adieu to goddess Durga amid fervent beating of drums and cheers on Saturday. Men, women and children danced in front of the idols in reverence to the mother goddess.

The idol immersion at Sadarghat which began in the morning continued as late as 3 am with as many as 243 idols immersed in river Barak. However, since Navami and Dashami fell on the same day, some idols were immersed on Friday. Idol immersion also continued on Monday as some of the big budget Puja committees of the town rallied through the streets with their Durga idols.

Meanwhile, tight security arrangements were made to conduct the idol immersion ceremony in a safe and peaceful manner.

On the other hand, with the weather remaining favourable and skies being clear, the devotees thronged the Puja pandals across the town and on the outskirts in large numbers throughout the Puja days.

Like in the previous years, Udharbond Kalibari Road and Uttarpara Pujari Brinda attracted massive crowds with their attractive pandals, idols and lighting arrangements. Tarun Club, Pratham Palli, Tarapur Motor Stand, Itkhola Durga Bari, Appolo Club of Meherpur, Dakshin Bilpar Puja Committee and Milan Sangha of Bilpar witnessed heavy crowds during the puja days.
