Sikkim Subject Bachao Committee stages dharna

By Correspondent

GANGTOK, Dec 28 The Sikkim Subject Bachao Committee (SSBC) has urged the State Government to immediately withdraw the notification of Residential Certificate saying the notification is against the interests of Sikkimese people.

We will continue our movement until the decision is withdrawn by the government, said Nar Bahadur Bhandari, president of Sikkim Pradesh Congress Committee (SPCC) and chief convenor of SSBC, in a press meet. He further said that SSBC would work more vigorously to disseminate the facts of the Residential Certificate and the conspiracy of the government. He alleged that the issuance of the notification was illegal.

The citizens of Sikkim are now aware of the plots of the government regarding the Residential Certificate thus the notification should be withdrawn, Bhandari said. Bhandari added that SSBC has been conducting its programmes peacefully.

He warned, If Pawan Chamling government failed to do justice to the rights of the Sikkimese people then the Central Government should take action and enforce Presidents Rule in the State.

The SSBC on Thursday staged a dharna in front of the DCs (East) Office at Sichey. The committee also forwarded a memorandum to the DC.

Padam Chettri, SSBC general secretary, expressed that they also want to control the influx in the State. We are not against the Residential Certificate but prior to issuing the certificate the government should prepare a list of the left out people. The government does not have such a plan though. We also want to know who the left out people are because most of the original Sikkimese know the left out people, he said.

He added that there are many Sikkimese people who were deprived of the Residential Certificate in 1961 hence the government should provide them not only the Residential Certificate but the Sikkim Subject Certificate as well. He informed of raising this issue at the national level through his BJP party.

The dharna was also participated by Dr AD Subba, president of Sikkim Himali Rajya Parishad, Biraj Adhikari, president of Sikkim National Peoples Party, Punya Prasad Koirala, secretary of Sikkim unit CPI(M).
