Sikkim mulls cancer hospital

GANGTOK, Sept 29 - Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang attended a programme during which a presentation was made for setting up a state-of-the-art cancer hospital at Jorethang in South Sikkim. Other top State Government officials were also present during the programme.

The proposed hospital aims to cater to people from neighbouring States and countries like Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, etc. It will have world-class treatment facilities like traditional cancer treatment including surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy, and the latest methods like proton therapy, which is an advanced method of treating cancer. It will provide world-class patient care with more than 500 beds, 10 or more medical departments, multispeciality and superspeciality departments, accommodation, etc.

The Chief Minister directed the officials to conduct a Request for Proposal (RFP) for the project. He called for an integration of insurance schemes so that everyone in Sikkim can avail of the services in the hospital with minimum hassles. He also stressed the need of providing the best medical facilities to the Sikkimese people and making Sikkim a medical hub.
