Shutdown, blockade hit normal life in Manipur

By Sobhapati Samom

IMPHAL, June 9 - The 24-hour total shutdown and subsequent 10-day economic blockade on National Highways and ban on ongoing national projects in the tribal areas of Manipur has disturbed normal life in tribal areas and also created panic buying of fuel particularly petrol in the State capital on Thursday.

The total shutdown which came into force midnight last affected normal life in the five hill district headquarters. The shutdown was called by the Joint Action Committee against Anti-Tribal Bills (JAC) in protest against the alleged unprecedented use of excessive force against unarmed peaceful tribal protesters in New Delhi.

The shutdown was total in Chandel and Churachandpur towns, with markets, educational institutions besides government and private offices remaining closed for the day. However, there is no report of any untoward incident till the report goes to press.

The situation in the State continues to be disturbing as a 10-day economic blockade begins from June 9 midnight. The blockade was called by JAC in an emergency meeting with the Outer Manipur Tribals Forum, an apex body of Hmar Inpui, Mizo People Convention, Thadou Inpi, United Naga Council and Zomi Council on Tuesday. The blockade was called in protest against the passing of three Bills in Manipur Assembly last year.
