GUWAHATI, Sept 2 - Irresponsible behaviour of a section of citizens may push Assam towards a dangerous situation as there is a possibility of the State facing shortage of hospital beds to treat COVID-19 patients, warned noted physician and former principal of Barpeta Medical College, Dr Bhabani Chakravarty. He also said that the State is paying the price for not augmenting medical facilities for a long time.
Talking to The Assam Tribune, Dr Chakravarty expressed concern over the increase in the number of COVID-19 patients in the State and said that irresponsible behaviour of a section of people should be blamed for the present situation. He pointed out that large number of people of the State are not taking adequate precautions to check spreading of the disease. Simple precautions like wearing of masks in public places, hand sanitization and maintaining social distancing can check spread of COVID-19, but unfortunately, a large number of people are gathering in public places without taking these simple precautions, he added.
Dr Chakravarty said that some advanced countries like Italy and France managed to bring the situation under control as after initial hiccups, where a large number of people were killed, majority of the population learnt the lessons and took precautions. In case of China, the Government had to impose strict rules to bring the situation under control. However, unfortunately, the people in Assam have not learnt the lessons, he said.
Dr Chakravarty expressed the view that only Government actions cannot bring the situation under control and social organizations, public leaders including religious leaders should come forward to create awareness among the people. He said that any more lockdown can be disastrous for the economy and the people must behave in a responsible manner.
The physician pointed out that at present, the Government is providing free COVID tests and treatment. But the Government does not have unlimited resources and this can cause a major problem in the days to come. He also said that there is the possibility of the State facing shortage of hospital beds and even the private hospitals are facing shortage of beds for COVID patients.
Dr Chakravarty further said that the State is paying the price for not augmenting the health facilities for years. He pointed out that for 40 years from 1968 to 2008, no new medical college was set up in the State, which was unfortunate. Though new medical colleges are now being set up, it will take some time to deal with the problem of shortage of doctors in the State, he added.
