Shops, business houses remain closed in Jorhat, Mariani, Titabar

JORHAT, Nov 26 - Shops and business establishments remained closed in Jorhat, Mariani, Titabar towns in Jorhat district on Thursday as a mark of respect to the former three-time Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, whose mortal remains were consigned to flames in Guwahati today.

Shops in other areas across the district were reported to have downed their shutters in the afternoon when the last rites of Gogoi were performed in Guwahati today.

The shops and commercial establishments kept their shutters down as per the bandh call given by traders� bodies of the towns in the district.

With the State Government declaring a half-holiday on Thursday in the honour of the veteran leader today, most of the people remained indoors with only a few vehicles on the roads were seen plying.

Homage was paid to Gogoi at a condolence meeting organized at the Jorhat Press Club this evening. Several organizations like Jorhat district units of AASU, AJYCP and an NGO �The Event� joined in the meeting to offer their respects to the leader.

Floral tributes were offered at the portrait of the former Chief Minister and lamps were lit up by those who attended the meet. A prayer for the eternal peace of the departed soul was held.

Several persons spoke about the contributions of the stalwart towards Assam. Jorhat Press Club members recalled the immense support extended by Gogoi in establishing the press club from granting financial aid to allotment of the land during the tenure of Gogoi�s government.
