By ANN Service

SIVASAGAR, Nov 10 - In a prompt and laudableaction that hasvastly altered the scenario around the historic Shiva Doul here, the Sivasagar district administration has cleared its premises of beggars and streetchildrenand proclaimed it as a beggar free zone yesterday.

Dr MS Laksmipriya, the new Deputy Commissioner of Sivasagar has accorded priority to make the town clean as part of the ongoing Soulful Sivasagar mission in a bid to woo tourists.

The Deputy Commissioner directed the Education and Child Welfare departments to take care of the 11 streetchildren who along with their elderly members had long been making the Shiva Doul campus a dirty den of pickpockets and drug abusers.

Vide an official order, the District Magistrate barred giving alms or providing shelter to beggars in the area. From now onwards, those who offer money or other things to such vagrants will be penalised, the order stated.
