SHILLONG, Aug 19 (PTI): The Shillong traffic police have decided to crack down on reckless and rash driving by motorcyclists who do daredevil stunts such as �wheelies�, �stoppies�, �human compass� and �no handers� in the city.
From January to June this year, there have been 24 accidents leading to six deaths in the city involving bikes, official records say. The victims were mostly pillion riders.
�Flying squads or crack units with officers on motorbikes carrying compounding books will very soon roam the city streets to apprehend over-speeding riders and stunt maniacs,� said Herbert G Lyngdoh, DSP (City).
�We shall come down heavily on young heroes trying to play with their own lives by over-speeding, not properly wearing helmets or carrying out stunts,� the DSP said adding that strict action would be initiated against rowdy riders.
The already traffic-clogged streets of the capital city are also used veritably as dirt tracks by young bikers, mostly students who give two hoots to traffic rules or rights of pedestrians, police say.
There are about 17,000 two-wheelers, comprising over 8000 scooters and 9000 motorbikes, on the city roads.
Dwelling on yet another menace, that of modification of motorbike silencers, the DSP said, �We shall not allow this anymore since it adds to noise pollution,� he said adding that there has already been a substantial increase in fines levied on unruly bikers in and around the city.
Stating that the traffic department was aware of certain biker gangs in the city, the DSP said stringent action would be initiated against anyone found violating traffic norms. �We need to check the menace before it gets out of hand,� he added. � PTI
