Shillong Lajong edge past AP Blues

GUWAHATI, Sept 6 � The only I League team of North East � Shillong Lajong � earned full points in the first quarterfinal league of the Bordoloi Trophy Tournament.

In the keenly-contested encounter at the Nehru Stadium here under lights, the Shillong outfit edged past Assam Police Blues 1-0.

The all important goal was netted by Kelechi Okoye in the 70th minute when he made no mistake in shooting home off a spot kick

Police defender Gauri Kanta Rabha brought down Lajong attacker Loma inside the Police box and a penalty was awarded to the visiting team.

It was an action packed encounter as the ball moved from one end to another quite frequently. Both the teams were in attacking mood and made repeated forays at the opponent�s citadel.

Shillong frontliners Anil Gurung, Boithang and Lalramluaha combined well with midfielders Mahlima, Kelechi and Samson. They were fast in exchanging the ball and made several attempts at the Police goal but luck did not favour them in the first session. In the 20th minute, they hit the target when Samson�s header off a setpiece taken by Lalramluaha hit the cross piece and dropped inside the goal. But the linesman as well as the referee failed to judge properly.

The Police players also were on their toes and created numbers of openings. In the 40th minute, Joseph Maslai unleashed a smart drive but the Shillong goalkeeper Gumpe Rime made a brilliant save. Police attackers � Bijoy Rabha, Joseph and Sarbananda Sonowal � gave a tough time to the Shillong defenders. In the 60th minute, Joseph�s volley returned of the Shillong bar.

Rabijit Jigdung, after taking to the field in the second session, tried to cruise through the Lajong defence displaying beautiful dribbling. But finally he could not inflict any damage as his shots were not accurate.

Today Police custodian Kailash Das also performed superbly and made some beautiful saves.

Nepal team arrives: The Three Star Club of Nepal has arrived here today for the Bordoloi Trophy Tournament.
