SHILLONG, Sept 15 - The Shillong Autumn Festival, one of the most popular festivals in Meghalaya, would be held on October 26 and 27 at the picturesque Orchid Lake Resort in Umiam.
Opus Production, organisers of the festival, said the state tourism department has agreed to become partners for the festival. One of the main objectives of the festival is to attract more tourists from states like Assam, West Bengal and others. �The idea behind holding the festival is to attract tourists and also allow the local population to be part of the festival and enjoy it,� said Alethea Lyngwa, one of the organising members.
Over the years, the autumn festival had become one of the most popular and biggest festivals of the state. However, the festival came to an abrupt close in 2013. Later, local entrepreneurs like Lyngwa and others got together and brought the festival back to life last year after a gap of five years.
Lyngwa said the organisers were hoping that more sponsors would come in so that the festival could be held in a grand way.
Ahead of the festival, the organisers have lined up a contest for music bands from the state as well as outside. Andreas War, another organiser, said the contest would be held in the first week of October. �The winner would take home prize money of Rs 1 lakh and the runners-up would get a prize of Rs 50,000. The winner would also get to perform at the autumn festival,� War said.
Mumbai-based rock band Indus Creed and a DJ from the US and renowned local bands like Snow White and Summersalt would entertain the audience at the festival. Other attractions of the festival would be water sports, a dedicated area for kids, camping facilities beside the lake and a magic show. There would be other events too, including fashion show and food, the organisers added.
