Shiladitya gets bail in defamation case

GUWAHATI, July 15 � The State BJP spokesperson, Shiladitya Dev today got bail on a defamation case filed against him by Anirudha Dey, son of Assam Minister for Irrigation and Soil conservation, Dr Ardhendu Kr. Dey.

Dev appeared in the Sub-Divisional Judicial Magistrate (SDJM) Court in Sankardev Nagar, Hojai today regarding a defamation case No.CR 198/13 filed against him.

A defamation case was registered against Dev on May 23, 2013 in the SDJM court in Hojai under Section 500/501 and 34 of the IPC after the BJP spokesperson had addressed a press meet in Guwahati where he had accused the minister and his son for rampant corruption in his constituency and their highhandedness in protecting criminal activities in the area. The press meet was carried in various print and electronic media on May 14, 2013 and was followed by public protest. Dev had also accused that many cases were registered against the minister and his son but till now no action has been taken. In this regard, a delegation comprising senior BJP leaders led by its president Sarbananada Sonowal had met the Assam Governor and demanded sanctions against the minister.

Dev who could not make an early appearance due to his work in the party and for the just-concluded Lok Sabha elections, today made a personal appearance. His lawyer Utpal Das had moved a petition for bail on PR bond which was not considered by the SDJM, Anurag Jintoo Borah Hussain. The judge finally granted him bail on a regular bond of Rs 7000 and one surety.

Later talking to the media, the BJP leader said that he has faith in the law of the land. He said that his fight against corruption will continue and he will always stand up for the development and protection of the needy people of the area without any fear.
