Sheffield win friendly match vs Assam XI

By Sports reporter

GUWAHATI, Nov 18 The oldest football club of the world, Sheffield Football Club of England, registered their first victory in their Indian tour today by defeating Assam XI.

Playing at the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium, Sarusajai here, the English team netted 2 against Assams 1.

The second half was interesting in comparison to the barren first half. Substitute Lee Cooksey opened two minutes after the break while Victor Chenedu restored parity in the 57th minute. Finally, it was Jordan Eagers who fired the final salvo in the 77th minute. Around 10,000 spectators gathered to enjoy England teams game and they were not disappointed although it could not be termed as an exciting encounter.

The first session was lacklustre as both the teams hardly could read each other. For Sheffield Ryan Davis, Callum Ward, Jordan and Matt Roney showed some good touch with the ball.

For Assam all the defenders, skipper Raju Konwar, Mitradev Swargiary, Biplab Sonowal and Jyotish Basumatary performed well. Goalkeeper Daoga Brahma was also in good form under the bar.
