Sheffield FC arrive for city match

GUWAHATI, Nov 17 � Sheffield Football Club of England, the oldest football team in the world, arrived here this morning from Shillong .

The team will play an exhibition match against Assam XI tomorrow at the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium, Sarusajai here.

Set up way back in 1857, Sheffield FC is an amateur side and are trying to improve their standard in a bid to get professional status. Richard Tims, the chairman of the team, while interacting with the mediapersons said apart from playing football they are associated with social activities. They visit different countries and work at the grassroot level for development of the game and to develop commercial relationships.

They have been organising various social activities in South Africa in the last couple of years and so, said Tims.

The team manager Chrish Dolby, while talking about the last two matches at Kolkata and Shillong, which they both lost, said the standard of referring and grounds were not up to the mark. That was the main reason that they lost the matches against Mohun Bagan and Shillong Lajong. But he was confident that tomorrow they are going to win the match.

He informed that most of the players of the team are young. Although they have no professionals, all the players are committed to perform well.

Assam Football Association secretary Ankur Dutta is expecting a good match tomorrow which will kick start at 5.30 pm. Dutta also intimated that buses will be available for spectators from various points of the city. He thanked Global Sports Management for organising the tour.
