GUWAHATI, June 26 - Handique Girls� College felicitated eminent Gandhian and social worker Shakuntala Choudhary on her 100th birthday at a function held at the Kasturba Gandhi National Memorial Trust, Assam branch, at Sarania here yesterday, stated a press release.
Choudhary was a student of the first batch at Handique Girls� College.
In the function, Principal Dr Utpal Dutta and former Principal Geeta Barua felicitated her with a shawl, a bouquet and a special birthday cake. In her speech, Geeta Barua said Choudhary�s life is an example of dedication towards Gandhiji�s principles.
Choudhary also spoke briefly and showered her blessings on the college she studied in.
During the celebration, Manjyotshna Mahanta performed a Guru Vandana followed by a Jyoti Sangeet, while Dr Madhuchanda Chaliha Bhuyan sang a Borgeet. Dr Bandana Nabis Das offered the vote of thanks. A tree was planted on the occasion as a gift to Shakuntala Choudhary.
It may be mentioned that Mahatma Gandhi had visited Assam for the fourth and the last time in 1946, during which he inaugurated the Assam branch of the Kasturba Gandhi National Memorial Trust and a Gram Sevikas Vidyalaya.
