Shah�s Manipur visit postponed

IMPHAL, March 12 - Union Home Minister Amit Shah�s proposed visit to Manipur on March 15 has been postponed in view of the Government�s advisory to avoid mass gathering due to the coronavirus threat.

State Government spokesperson Thongam Biswajit Singh, who is also the Works and Power Minister in the BJP-led coalition Government in Manipur, conveyed this to reporters at his Secretariat office here this afternoon.

Biswajit Singh said Shah�s visit has now been rescheduled to April 15. It may be mentioned here that the State Government had already started the construction of a stage for the proposed visit of the Union Home Minister.

Meanwhile, Biswajit Singh urged the people of the State to avoid mass congregations, especially during the ongoing Yaoshang Festival, considering the threat posed by coronavirus. He stressed the need of precautionary measures, especially during the Thabal Chongba held as part of the festival, as it involves mass gathering.

Although there is no confirmed case of COVID-19 in the State till date, the Manipur Government has geared up its machinery in the border areas and the airport, to screen people entering the State.

So far, more than one lakh people, including air passengers, have been screened at entry points including Moreh, Behiang, Sinzawl, Tusom, Kamjong, Mao Gate, Jiribam and the Imphal airport.

The State Government has also restricted movement of people across the international border with Myanmar.

Minister Biswajit Singh stated that the WHO has already declared COVID-19 a pandemic.
