Shahidul Alom Choudhury Award to AR Mazumdar

GUWAHATI, April 3 - The executive committee of the Minority Welfare Society (MWS) met at the Murshidul Alom Memorial Hall here today to chalk out the details of the 20th annual general meeting of the society scheduled to be held on May 1 next.

The committee announced that this year�s prestigious Shahidul Alom Choudhury Memorial Award will be conferred on Jonab Abid Raja Mazumdar, former Principal in-charge, Nehru College, Pailapool, Cachar, for his outstanding contribution in the fields of literature, education and social service.

The award will be handed over at the annual general meeting. Late Shahidul Alom Choudhury was Minister for Local Administration and Rural Development in the Cabinet of Prafulla Kumar Mahanta. He hailed from Hailakandi district in the Barak Valley.

It may be mentioned that MWS represents over 1,000 families belonging to the minority community originally from the Barak Valley districts, now settled in Guwahati on account of professional and other needs.

The meeting was presided over by Mukhtar Hussain Ahmed Choudhury, president, and conducted by Abdul Waris Chowdhury, general secretary of MWS, said a statement.

In addition, there will be various competitions and programmes covering quirat (recitation of the Quran), quiz, on-the-spot art and extempore speech. Prizes and certificates will be given away to students who have achieved outstanding results in various board and university examinations. The Dr Rezia Sultana Memorial Award will be given to a girl student for meritorious performance in medical education.
