By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Sept 13 - Demanding concrete action from the Prime Minister Narendra Modi on five major issues affecting the people of Assam and the Northeast, the Save Guwahati Build Guwahati (SGBG) has written to the Prime Minister for a holistic solution to the problems.

The organization in its memorandum stated that problems like perennial floods, changing demography due to heavy influx, failure to tap the resources and potential, stagnant development due to divide-and-rule politics and energy-related issues need urgent attention of the authorities.

We could not see your insight into any one of the five burning problems that a common person of this region could relate to. We also feel your party people need to take up things seriously in addressing issues, if you are serious about making any change for the benefit of people of this region, stated the memorandum.

The organization demanded that floods be declared as a national problem and be addressed with well-planned mechanism; the hills should be protected through canopy by afforestation, trenches and water harvesting, and steps should be taken for stopping deforestation, mineral extraction, etc, in a planned manner.

It also called for providing Constitutional safeguard to the ethnic people of the State, including political and socio-economic safeguard to the indigenous people, including right over land and resources.

SGBG also stressed that a community governance strengthening policy is required for empowering the small and marginal farmers along with the micro entrepreneurs for ensuring sustainable livelihood and job security, and also demanded policy for establishing eco-friendly power generation alternatives and making the region self-sufficient in energy generation.

The Assam Immigration Expulsion Act 1950 should be implemented all over India equally, the memorandum stated.

We, and several other organizations together have given memorandum to all political parties and the Government of India, including senior leaders of your party time and again to resolve the issues. Employment and other issues may also be taken up along with the above five problems to have a holistic solution, it added.
