SGBG for white paper on water supply schemes

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, June 12 - Voluntary organisation Save Guwahati Build Guwahati (SGBG) today demanded a white paper from the State government on the three under-construction water supply schemes of the city and the one being implemented for North Guwahati.

SGBG president Krishno Kanto Borooah, vice president Ajoy Dutta and advisor Dhiren Baruah told this newspaper that the white paper should cover all aspects relating to the schemes, including the factors that have delayed their commissioning, the proposed dates for their commissioning and the escalation in their costs.

The government should also state categorically as to who it would hold responsible for the escalation in the costs of the schemes. Moreover, the government should stop being apathetic and initiate immediate measures to repair the roads damaged for laying the pipes of the water supply network of these schemes.

Several assurances were made by the government in the Guwahati Development Department on the commissioning of these schemes. The GMDA has also made announcements on the deadlines for commissioning the schemes.

The present GMDA Chairman had declared before the media that soon 25,000 households of West Guwahati would start getting water from the South West Guwahati Water Supply Scheme. But till date, there is no positive development in this regard, the SGBG office-bearers alleged.
